State of the markets

Updated 24 July 2026 · refreshed weekly

Equities are digesting the first real wobble of the AI build-out: the S&P 500 sits near 7,400 after Tesla fell 15 per cent and Alphabet 7 per cent on capex-heavy results. The 10-year Treasury yield is near 4.7 per cent, a 52-week high, with markets pricing roughly one-in-three odds of a hike at the 28 to 29 July FOMC meeting and a full hike by September. Brent is back above $100 on the Hormuz war-risk repricing, gold trades near $4,050, USD/JPY is pinned near 160 ahead of the Bank of Japan, and the 10-year gilt is back above 5 per cent. Next week brings the Fed, the Bank of England, the Bank of Japan and four of the five largest US earnings reports: see the week ahead.
